Abstract

Around the world, the quest for employment has shifted
from local markets to the international markets;
principally because the world has become more
globalized and interconnected. Multilingualism has
emerged as a critical asset for career advancement and
professional mobility as a result of this shift. The aim of
this study is to examine and review how multilingualism
enhances career advancement, employability and access
to international job markets. The study is a qualitative
and descriptive study which relied on primary and secondary data sources. The data were derived from final
year students of AFIT and ABU, who are prospective job
seekers. The study is predicated on Gumperz’s Theory of
Interactional Sociolinguistics which examines how
language shapes access to employment and workplace
success in multilingual and multicultural societies. The
data analysed the diverse linguistic and cultural
backgrounds of the students, the challenges of being
understood as a result of cultural orientations despite
their linguistic competence. Findings revealed the
importance of multilingualism to career opportunities,
enhanced global competitiveness and growth. The study
concludes that multilingualism is a crucial component in
professional development and recommends that
programs and educational curricula should be positioned
as key drivers for successful employment opportunities
in the 21st century
