THE DIGITALIZATION PARADOX:ANALYZING THE IMPACT OF DIGITALTOOLSON WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY ANDEMPLOYEE COGNITIVE ENGAGEMENT

Abstract

This study investigated the digitalization paradox,
wherein radical digitalization simultaneously enhanced
material productivity and eroded human welfare.
Through longitudinal, cross-sectional, and comparative
analyses, the research confirmed that digital tools
improved measurable efficiency—accelerating task
completion, collaboration, and industrial growth—yet
imposed significant cognitive costs, including
technostress, fragmented attention, and diminished
reflective thought. The findings revealed that workload
intensity mediated the paradox, creating systemic
feedback loops that reinforced productivity gains while
undermining cognitive resilience. Comparative analysis
across advanced and emerging economies highlighted
global variability: in advanced contexts, digitalization
produced substantial efficiency gains but elevated
burnout, while in emerging economies, infrastructural
limitations amplified cognitive strain despite modest material outcomes. Philosophically, the study argued that
material wealth without human dignity is worthless.
Industrialization through digitalization, when pursued
without safeguards, reduces citizens to instruments of
production, stripping them of intrinsic value. The
utilitarian calculus of “the greatest good for the greatest
number” collapses when dignity is neglected, exposing
the hollowness of progress that sacrifices human welfare
for material gain. The impacts of the study were both
theoretical and practical. Theoretically, it extended
socio-technical systems theory, cognitive load theory,
and technostress frameworks by situating digitalization
as a cybernetic system. Practically, it emphasized the
urgent need for organizational interventions, policy
safeguards, and global frameworks that balance material
development with cognitive sustainability. For Nigeria,
the study articulated a covenant that redefined national
development as the balanced integration of material
wealth and human dignity. The study, therefore, affirmed
that digitalization must be humanized. Sustainable
progress requires reorienting values—placing human
welfare at the center of industrial and technological
advancement. Only then can digitalization become not a
paradox, but a pathway to authentic human and national
development.
